1929 Bugatti Type 40.
Introduced in 1926, the Bugatti Type 40 was intended to be a reasonably priced sport-tourer. The frame was a shortened version of the one used on the Type 38, and the car’s axles and transmission also carried over. Power came from a 1.5-liter overhead-camshaft inline four-cylinder with three valves per cylinder, used on the eight-cylinder Type 35 Grand Prix racer. Output was said to be in the neighborhood of 60 horsepower, which gave the Type 40 a top speed of around 75 MPH. Chassis 40810 was ordered new by Pierre de Brou de Lauriere in late 1929, left the Molsheim factory wearing a “rudimentary body” in an effort to pare weight to a minimum. The Bugatti participated in the Rallye Algers and the 1930 Bugatti Sahara Expedition.
